The alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old college student two days ago in Coimbatore has once again prompted discussions on severe punishment for sexual assault. Way back in 2013, then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa advocated chemical castration for rapists and the then DMK president Karunanidhi batted for solitary life imprisonment.
